I was asked to speak at the Philanthropy Forward ’12 for the Ohio Grantmakers Forum on practical office technologies.
I remarked that “The lines have blurred so much – there isn’t work technology or home technology or educational technology – it’s all just technology and to be effective you need to integrate it across your life.”

I’m often asked what is the practical difference between scanning film at 8 bit verses 16 bit or saving a TIFF verses a JPG with quality set to 12 in Photoshop.
For all practical purposes there isn’t any difference and when comparing them in Photoshop using a difference filter the naked eye sees nothing out of place.
In fact most of the time the comparison images look pure black!
I was asked by friend to address what the human eye can’t see. So instead of just overlapping the images in Photoshop and running a difference to see what pixels, if any, looked out of place – I decided to flatten the image and then run an Equalize Adjustment in order to stretch the data into a range into which I could see the differences.
The Equalize command redistributes the brightness values of the pixels in an image so that they more evenly represent the entire range of brightness levels. Equalize remaps pixel values in the composite image so that the brightest value represents white, the darkest value represents black, and intermediate values are evenly distributed throughout the grayscale.
For this post I am using lower resolution images and displaying the outcome as 8bit JPG files set to quality 12 but you can see the differences I am trying to demonstrate clearly.
Let’s start with a photograph that I took in Ireland, this is a scan from the negative:

In the end I am fascinated by the amount of data that is being lost in each of these cases. For my own archives I’ve been saving the originals as 16 bit TIF files with the Digital ICE set to normal. But I wonder if I should look more into the 16x sampling mode as well as the Digital ICE fine mode.
I also like the similarity in the ‘look’ of the differences between the 16x sampling comparison and the Digital ICE comparisons.
Recently at work I was asked to investigate various display technologies (like visualization walls and large format printing) and I thought I would take a slightly different approach to the problem.
Warning: There is a lot of math in this article but you can skip the equations along the way and still follow along.
Whenever we talk about displaying things we invariably talk about the size of the display and the resolution.
In my multimedia class I define resolution as the number of pixels wide something is by the number of pixels tall something is – it is the absolute number of pixels that we have.
The trick when displaying or printing is what to do with these pixels.
Pixels vs Dots
When asked by a student: How big is a pixel? I always answer: A pixel is. A pixel is a unit of measurement. A pixel simply defines a single piece of data. A “dot” on the other hand is a pixel in physical form. A “dot” can be measured. On the screen one pixel of information can be represented by a dot – this dot has a physical dimension. When we print we use the same terminology but it gets a little murkier. When we talk about how we distribute a resolution across a given space we use the term DPI or dots per inch. This is a measurement of density. Are the dots spread out or are they closer together. The reason this is murky is that printers use even smaller dots (of primary print colors) to create a single dot. So a single pixel printed as a single dot is really made up of even smaller dots. This bothers a lot of people but it shouldn’t because each dot on the screen is also made up of smaller dots (of primary light colors). In the end – these smaller dots whether on the screen or on the page are supposed to be so small that our visual acuity cannot discern them individually and they blend into a whole – a single dot for each pixel of information.
People tend to use the term DPI for print and PPI (pixels per inch) for screens – I feel DPI is the more appropriate term as we are talking about measurable dots – and I will use the term DPI for the rest of this article.
A common misconception is that 300DPI is ideal for print and 72DPI for the screen. This is a gross oversimplification and too often wrong. While 300DPI does tend to work well for print – display technologies have changed drastically and it is a rare occasion that the 72DPI concept is useful.
So what I want to do here is flip the conversation. Instead of talking about printers and screens – I want to talk about what a human being can see. The perceptual side of things.
A circle is made of of 360 degrees. A single degree is made of of 60 arc minutes. So 1 arc minute is 1/21,600 of a full circle.
When we say a person has 20/20 vision we mean they have the acuity to discern a detail of 1 arc minute.
Some people have worse vision such as 20/40 and they can only discern at 2 arc minutes – some have better vision such as 20/10 and they can discern 0.5 arc minutes.
There is a physical limit to human visual acuity as there are only so many cones (color sensors) in the eye and while 20/8 is possible it is rare – the kind of thing you see in fighter pilots.
Size, Distance, and Density
So when we look at picture, poster, or monitor we are really talking about 3 different elements.
The size of the thing – and based on the size of the thing we choose a distance to be from it when we view the thing, and then from there we can determine the density of dots that our visual acuity can actually resolve.
For my first example – let me start with my TV. I have a 55″ 1080p HD LCD TV.
TVs are measured diagonally and in reality the TV is approximately 50″x30″.
So based on the size – how far away do I want to sit? Well that depends on how much of my Field of View (FOV) I want to fill.
While the human Field of View is very wide – a comfortable (practical) Field of View is 40 degrees. Pick too wide a FOV and yours eyes dart around – too narrow and the image just isn’t large enough.
With these 2 variables – Width of target and Field of View – I can calculate an ideal viewing distance.
Distance = (Width /2) / Tan(Viewing Angle/2)
Distance = (50/2) / Tan (40/2) = 68.7″ or 5.7′
So now I know that the ideal distance from my couch to my TV is 68.7″ or about 5 1/2′.
My TV is 1080p which means it has a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels.
1920 pixels spread over 50″ results in 38.4 DPI – this seems really low at first – but how does this line up with my visual acuity.
To answer this – I have to ask: If I am sitting 68.7″ away from something – what is the smallest sized dot that my visual acuity can resolve?
For this I need just 2 variables – the Distance from the target – and my own Visual Acuity which I will give as 20/20 (I wish).
From my Visual Acuity I can calculate my Visual Resolution – the smallest number of visual degrees I can detect.
Visual Resolution = (1 / Visual Acuity) * (1 / 60)
Visual Resolution = (1 / (20 / 20)) * (1 / 60) = 0.0166667 degrees
(1 / Visual Acuity) tells me how many arc minutes I can detect so (1 / (20/20)) = 1, (1 / (20/10)) = 0.5, and (1 / (20/8)) = 0.4 (which I said before is as good as it gets).
Multiplying the Number of Arc Minutes * (1 / 60) converts the number from arc minutes into degrees.
Smallest Dot Size = 2 * Distance * Tan (Visual Resolution/2)
Smallest Dot Size = 2 * 68.7 * Tan (0.0166667/2) = 0.019984 inches
Dots Per Inch = 1 / Smallest Dot Size
Dots Per Inch = 1 / 0.019984 = 50 DPI
So with my 20/20 vision I cannot resolve more than 50DPI on something that is about 5 1/2′ away. So my TV’s 38.4 DPI isn’t too bad after all.
And let us not forget the reality:
1) I am not looking for individual dots on the screen
2) I have worse that 20/20 vision
3) I sit more than 5 1/2′ from my TV
So basically here are the two lessons:
1) The DPI that we can actually perceive is a factor of our Visual Acuity and the Distance we are from an object. As with my previous example if I am 5 1/2′ away from something I cannot resolve more than 50DPI.
2) The distance we are away from something is a choice determined by our ideal FOV.
I have an iPhone 4s with a ‘retina’ display. The resolution of the screen is 640 x 960 pixels and the screen size is about 2″x3″. This means the screen is 320DPI.
The question – how far away from my face do I need to hold the phone for me to ‘not see the dots’ or at what distance is my visual acuity 320DPI?
Pixel Size = 1 / DPI
Pixel Size = 1 / 320 = 0.003125″
Distance = Pixel Size / (2 * Tan (Visual Resolution/2))
Distance = 0.003125 / (2 * Tan (0.0166667/2)) = 10.7″
So as long as I hold the phone 11″ away from my face I shouldn’t see individual dots. Seems about right.
I want a 24″x36″ poster for my office wall about 10′ from my desk. What DPI do I need to make it look good?
In this case we basically want to make sure we have at least the same amount of DPI as our visual acuity.
Using our equation we find:
Smallest Dot Size = 2 * Distance * Tan (Visual Resolution/2)
Smallest Dot Size = 2 * 120 * Tan (0.0166667/2) = 0.0349 inches
Dots Per Inch = 1 / Smallest Dot Size
Dots Per Inch = 1 / 0.0349 = 28 DPI
28 DPI – seems awfully low right?
Well it is – it is because there is another factor when it comes to photography and that is we don’t only view things hanging on a wall from a distance – people walk up to posters and photographs and look at them closer.
If this was a billboard – it would work great because you can’t get near a billboard – but with something hanging on the wall have to assume that people will get closer.
How close? Let’s say instead of 10 feet I choose 1 foot.
Smallest Dot Size = 2 * Distance * Tan (Visual Resolution/2)
Smallest Dot Size = 2 * 12 * Tan (0.0166667/2) = 0.00349 inches
Dots Per Inch = 1 / Smallest Dot Size
Dots Per Inch = 1 / 0.00349 = 286 DPI
And this is where the 300DPI rule comes from. Because at about a foot away – everything looks good at 300DPI.

Chromostereoscopy for Use in Visualization
Abstract: Traditional stereoscopic visualization requires either special projection technologies with polarized glasses or special display technologies with LCD shutter glasses to display depth. Other processes such as Red/Blue anaglyph process work both in print and on a computer screen but produce incomprehensible images when the glasses are not worn. Chromostereoscopy is the process of using special prismatic glasses to turn color into stereoscopic depth. Unlike other stereoscopic processes the images look clear without the glasses (though rainbow colored) and are augmented into depth while wearing them. This poster demonstrates examples of the process and offers advice on their usage and creation for visualization techniques.
How it Works: ChromaDepth glasses use prismatic filters that separate the image into the visible spectrum. Each color is shifted a different amount resulting in various planes of perceived depth. In the RGB on Black model – Red is closest and Blue is farthest away (with Black at infinity). In the CMY on White model – Cyan is closest and Yellow is farthest away (with White at infinity).
Photoshop: With a basic understanding of the ChromaDepth color palettes it is not difficult to create compositions. Adding other dimensional cues such as layers, perspective, overlap, and relative size will help to build an effective chromostereoscopic image.
From Depth Map to ChromaDepth: Since in Chromostereoscopy color equals depth – all types of data can be viewed by creating a “depth map”. A “depth map”(also known a as a “z-map”) is a picture where x and y represent space and the color of each pixel represents its height (either from the plane or from a virtual camera). These images are usually grayscale with white being closest and black being furthest away. This grayscale palette is then easily replaced in Photoshop with a custom ChromaDepth palette resulting in the color encoded image.
Step by Step in Photoshop:
- Create “depth map” image with White as near / Black as far
- Open image in Photoshop
- Convert image to grayscale : Image > Mode > Grayscale
- Convert imaget to index color : Image > Mode > Indexed Color
- Apply ChromaDepth palette : Image > Mode > Color Table
- Load ChromaDepth palette : Load > chroma.act > OK

It takes a lot to get me to write one of these but I’ve been watching all this vitriol pour out again on the net towards Trump’s sons and their hunting trip.
I’ve spent the last week grading papers in which my students had to talk about an issue of privacy or piracy. The reason I make them write about this topic is that everyone has a feeling or an opinion but few can truly express in words or in logic what it is they mean and then to truly defend their position.
Let’s cut through all the emotions and look at this clearly. Two brothers went on vacation, signed up for an ‘experience’ package, broke no laws, and had photos taken.
So what are they being accused of?
Animal Cruelty. They killed animals. Is it murder? No – because the animals weren’t people. Was it poaching? No – because it was legal to kill where they killed and what they killed. Was it hunting? Sure. You can argue how “challenging” it was but that’s something else entirely. People go hunting in overpopulated areas or in stocked lakes when they know they will catch something. We don’t get angry at fisherman. We don’t get angry at most hunting. If the Trumps had gone somewhere in the mountains and hunted deer – would there be this uproar?
What’s the difference between this and going deer hunting? And again – let’s stop – if you find yourself equally angry at them if they had gone deer hunting then say that. Say “I don’t like people who like to go hunting”. The rest of the situation is irrelevant to you. They went hunting – you don’t approve. I get it. That’s a fine argument. It’s a fine opinion.
So we continue. What’s the difference between this and going deer hunting? It cost a lot of money. That’s one issue. Clearly this is a luxury thing. And for some people the argument is “These people have too much money and shouldn’t be wasting it.” Its a fine argument. But it is their money and they can spend it how they like. Rich people can do rich people things. I am not rich but I am sure a lot of people judge me on how I spend my money. And they shouldn’t. The Trumps have a lot of money and I would be offended if they weren’t out there enjoying themselves with it. So – you don’t like rich people? Say that. I get it. That’s a fine argument. It’s a fine opinion.
But the animals are exotic/cute/endangered etc? There is no question that for some seeing dead animals is difficult. I lost my 19 year old cat 2 weeks ago and when she finally passed they asked if I wanted to stay with her a while. I said no. She was gone and I wasn’t going to hug and cry over her corpse. It was a personal decision. I don’t think hunters are sociopaths. If I thought hunters were sociopaths I would have to think that all carnivores are. I eat meat. I have a hand in the death of the cow. No I didn’t kill it myself – but I’ve killed and gutted a fish. And when I reeled it in – I was excited – but I wasn’t in a frenzied blood lust. There was a physical and mental challenge and I was caught up in that moment – not in the spiritually life ending murderous rampage that people are accusing them of. (If the Trump boys are indeed sociopaths then you should be glad that these outlets exist for them. And if you don’t get that this last sentence was a joke then I plead you to stop reading.) People are protesting that they wouldn’t kill a leopard. I get it. And you didn’t. No one is accusing you of killing one. They admit they did it. What don’t you like about it? That it is pretty? That is is rare? It’s not a threatened or endangered animal. Just because you wouldn’t do it – doesn’t make it wrong. Even their father made basically the same argument. People do have a right to live their lives the way they want – even if it offends you.
Then there is the elephant tail picture. I don’t argue with PETA or side with PETA – ever – they are crazy – we know they are crazy – they know they are crazy. But this picture shocks a lot of people. Several years ago I was in Cameroon and when I came back I gave several talks about my time there. While I was waiting to give one of these talks people were giving me deadly stares and really upset looks. Why? Because I was wearing traditional Cameroonian ceremonial dress. You could feel their venom. How dare I? And then I played the video. The video of the local King in front of hundreds of people putting this garment on me. Commanding me to wear it in pride and to go home and tell others about his people and my experience. You want the world to be smaller you have to live in it. If the custom was to hold the elephant tail – then you do it. Going along with it is the right thing to do – in fact – that part of the story is what makes it have heart. It wasn’t about pulling a trigger and walking away – it was about having a cultural experience. At this point you can argue that you wouldn’t want that experience. Fine. You can argue that the world is full of backwards traditions and practices – and while it might be true – they are fewer than you think. I get it – you are shocked and offended first and calmed and informed later. Most people don’t get to the second half. How many people bothered to look up what that tradition was before they condemned it? Because now you aren’t talking about the Trump brothers – now you are talking about being offended by another culture or that they wanted to take part of another culture. How small minded is that?
The meat didn’t go to waste. That’s a point of protocol. And again they are being harassed for it! People are saying that those people didn’t want the meat or if you really cared about them you would have just given them money. How dare you? It’s not your or my place to tell these guys how to spend their money. It’s THEIR money. I’m sorry you don’t like that they are rich. Let’s be really practical here – for most people complaining the fact that they went on vacation was wasteful itself. That’s not right. They stimulated the local economy. You might not like it but they did. I have traveled all around the world and trust me – people want your business. And more often than not – people wanted my business NOT my handouts.
And they took photos. And yes – we all have to admit this is terrible PR. No one should have seen these photos. And who posted them? The photos were from the travel company – and the stupid macho slogans bantered around are from the travel company. Do you really want people judging you by accusing you with the slogans of the products you use? The Trump brothers didn’t come out and do a commercial – we don’t have video of them acting the fool here and being all gun crazed yee-haw nuts. As a photographer and a traveler the reality was probably a lot more sedate (and at times more chaotic).
Before I wrote this I reminded myself of the old axiom: “Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.”
And then I read this tweet by Donald Trump Jr.: “I don’t apologize to cater to public opinion when I did nothing wrong. To do so would be to sell myself out.”

Today was a very sad day. I had to put Puppycat, my 19 year old Siamese, to sleep.
We came home last night to find her in front of her water bowl unable to move and soaked in her own urine. It was sad to see her suffer and not how I want to remember her.
19 years ago…
My friend Barbara told me her landlord said she couldn’t keep her Siamese kitten Tasha. Even though she was just a kitten Barbara was already her second owner. The original owner was very wealthy and paid $1,000 for her and had her 4 paw de-clawed (which I know is cruel and they missed a single claw) and then decided she didn’t want her anymore and gave her to Barbara.
I had played with Tasha a bunch of times and I always thought she was cute. When Barbara told me she needed to find a home for her I asked my girlfriend Suzanne if she knew a good home and Suzanne suggested that I take her (which it turns out was what Barbara wanted as Tasha was only ever nice to me).
I never meant to ‘rename’ Tasaha but I started to call her Puppycat and it stuck.
She was a very unusual cat. She never cleaned herself, she never covered her litter, she would burn her whiskers in candles. The vet said that she had instinct problems because she was taken away from her mother to early and was mildly retarded. That aside she was loving and clever – sure she ran away from the litter box every times she pooped but she came when called and was always there when I needed her.
She also knew she had that single claw. She would come at you with it if she needed to. When she first went into heat she was crazy and when I took to get her fixed they agreed to remove the last claw. The vet was very nice and told me that the first vet was a butcher and he removed bone fragments from all four paws. It left with her one flabby paw – she would nurse that paw and hated anyone touching it. After that though she became a biter – she would warn before she bit – and she would bite very deep – it was the only way she knew how to express herself. She never really bit me – but then again – I was the only one she every really liked.
For 19 years she was my loving companion. She would often play with other cats and she came to tolerate the dog (who really wanted to be her friend) but I think Junior is going to miss her most of all. When we got Junior (my Manx) as a kitten, Puppycat really changed and her maternal instincts kicked in. Puppycat started to groom Junior (though still not herself) and the two wrestled and cuddled every night.
We all have stories about our pets. I could tell the story about the time I took her to the mall in a bag, the time she tore open a friend of mine’s bag and ate all his pot, the time she knocked over my friends 5 year old little boy and stole his pizza, or that she would play with a ball of yarn so fiercely that she would tie the chairs to the table.
Her last few years have been quiet ones. She spent most of her time sleeping on the ottoman and playing with Junior. I had hoped she would die in her sleep and putting her down was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do.

These 2 episodes chronicle the first of my 12 days hunting castles in Ireland in 2003. This was killer low budget (don’t full screen it) and it represents my first time in front of a video camera (as well as simultaneously behind it). No mics, no lights, no crew just a video camera, a still camera, and a killer mullet. Some fun/weird things happen in future episodes and I think these set the tone for what I will be doing in future episodes.

The Hippodrome: Serpentine Column, Egyptian Obelisk, The German Fountain, Constantine Obelisk
The hotel I like to stay at is right in the Hippodrome and it really is a park like atmosphere. The monuments are all outdoors and are fun (and quick) to see. I like to see them during the day and at night as the flavor of the area changes.
The Museum of Turkish and Islamic Art
The museum is fascinating and offers a really nice mix of things to see. The collection really rounds out things you won’t see at other museums. I missed it my first year though and felt really bad.
The Blue Mosque
There are many mosques in Istanbul but this one you can not miss! On both previous expeditions I went back several times. It is truly an awesome experience. You have to watch the clothing restrictions: be prepared to take off your shoes, women are given head covers and men can’t wear shorts. Some people really respect that this is a house of worship but don’t be surprised by tourists who don’t show it (or the rules) any reverence. Be offended by these people – just don’t be surprised.
The Arasta Bazaar
Right outside of the Blue Mosque is a small and very low key bazaar. It’s not a madhouse and very fun to look at – the prices aren’t great but shopping is as much looking as it is buying.
The Great Palace Mosaic Museum
This is located in the Arasta Bazaar and it has some fantastic mosaics. There is a lot to read and even more to see – though it is really just one big open space laid out so you can walk around and see it from above and at ground level. I’ve hard some people think its small but I include it on my must see list.
The Basilica Cictern
Not far from the Hippodrome is the Bascilica Cictern – also something not to miss. It is dark and cavernous, this underground water reservoir is a little hard to describe. It has some cool architecture (and a Medusa head). Plus they filmed parts of From Russia With Love in it.
The Hagia Sophia
One of the most important places in Art History and in Christianity – it was recently renovated and you can spend time just basking in the vastness of it. This is a universal must see. Expect to spend a lot of time here – it is big – and you don’t want to miss any of the nooks and crannies.
This place is huge! You have to pay extra to see the Harem but it is worth it. Between the gardens, the Harem, the treasury and the reliquary you can spend a lot of time here. The reliquary even has the sword of David & the staff of Moses! There are also some amazing views of the rest of the city.
It’s in the outer courtyard of Topkapi Palace so if it’s open peak in.
The Istanbul Museum of Archeology
This museum goes on and on (and on). I think you need to pick your battles as I don’t think anyone can see the entire thing. At some point you will just start to survey. I have seen it all I just haven’t read it all. I tell people to go but not to feel bad if they get overloaded.
The Column of Constantine
Is a nice monument plus it’s on the way to The Grand Bazaar.
The Grand Bazaar
Everyone should go to the Grand Bazaar twice. Once to view – once to shop. You can get great deals or you can get badly swindled. You can get knockoff designer versions of anything. I also like to wander the streets around it – the farther you wander the better the prices. When I buy scarves I keep walking to where the Turkish women shop and the prices plummet to a few dollars each.
Sahaflar Carsisi – The Book Bazaar
I hunted this down because I really wanted to see it – it isn’t too far from the Grand Bazaar (but it isn’t too close either). They have some very nice print and book merchants but most everything of course is in Turkish. Prints are expensive and you need to know what you are looking at before you buy anything.
This is one of the most important mosque’s in Istanbul. It is a real pleasure to visit and there is a garden, cemetery, and tomb.
Across the Golden Horn (but still on the European side of the Bosphorus) is the other big palace. Well worth going – the last room is one of the most breathtaking rooms I have ever seen in my life (and I have been to Versailles). Like Topkapi there are extra fees for the Harem and it also has a clock museum and an aviary. All of which are worth doing!
Everyone ends up at Taksim Square because it is so famous – its just a square (though I didn’t go at night) and it has a Starbucks – I don’t drink coffee it’s just a sign of the times.
The neighborhood right outside of Taksim is all upscale shopping and there is a trolly that connects Taksim to the Galata Tower (area) fun to walk around for a little but then I like to take the old fashioned trolley.
Every panorama of Istanbul is taken from Galata Tower – it has great views and they offer a very expensive dinner/show which I have not been to. The area around it has a lot of musical instrument shops. The whole area has a really mellow vibe.
The bridge connects back across the Golden Horn. Underneath there are a bunch of seafood restaurants. Watch the prices and if what you are ordering is local fresh or just fresh fresh.
While modern trains still run through the station it is the original terminus for the Orient Express and they have a nifty little museum. It really is a hidden gem and shows a part of history you don’t see in other parts of the city.
Ali Muhiddin Haci Bekir
Not far from the station is the sweet shop that invented Turkish Delight. You have to go if just to get a free sample.
I like going to this sweet shop because it has a larger variety of items (and also more free samples).
The Spice Bazaar aka The Egyptian Bazaar
The Spice Bazaar is not very large but it is a completely different experience from the Grand Bazaar. Everyone will try and sell you Saffron and giant Jasmine flowers. The different teas are fun to get and they will vacuum seal everything for you. You can get your luggage overloaded pretty fast by bringing home a kilo of this and a kilo of that. Like the Grand Bazaar I like to walk around and see the area that has spilled over around it for amazing food and culinary supplies.
The New Mosque
Is attached to the Spice Bazaar so if you have a few peak in.
The church is a must must see and the mosaics and frescoes are breathtaking and even though it is harder to get to its really worth the trip. Some nice shopping right around it as well. There is nothing else like it in Istanbul!
The Theodosian Walls
The outer walls of the city – while you can see them everywhere – when you are by Chora you really get a chance to explore them. Every so often you find stairs that lead to the top of the walls – and if you aren’t afraid of heights you can get some awesome views.
The Palace of the Porphyrogenitus
Part of the wall (and near Chora) forms the ruin of a ancient palace – its right by a playground and a truck parking lot. I love architecture so I hunted it down – for most though it is just a different stretch of wall.
Just another stretch of the old city walls that has the ruins of some window openings of another palace long gone. It’s really hard to find – and not worth it for most. It is on the far side of the city walls by the water.
The Valens Aqueduct
It is a huge aqueduct running through the city – with traffic going under. I thought it was great – but again I’m into architecture – tricky to get to though – it isn’t near anything else.
Sehzade Camii – The Prince’s Mosque
Since I wander everywhere for architecture I visited this really nice Mosque.
Across the water (on the Asian side) is this little palace which I think is a real gem to visit. You take the train to Dolmabahce and then the ferry across the water (and then a taxi) sounds like a hike but it really is lovely.
Since I am a castle guy – I need to see the local castles. This one has 7 towers and is totally empty! Not for those afraid of heights (which I am) because they really let you explore the towers and walls. To get there you take a real train. It is not for most and I don’t imagine a lot of people go there but I think it is awesome!
I have a thing for malls – and this is the largest mall in Europe and the 6th largest in the world. The 5th floor is one giant food court, the 6th is all restaurants. Why am I telling you this? Because sometimes when I am out of the country for a month I need to go to the movies! Plus fast food in Istanbul is much better than fast food at home.
A Bosphorus Cruise
There are many ways to see the Bosphorus and the best way is a cruise. Not a big fancy one – just the basic “Full Bosphorus Cruise”. While you can get on and off, I like to take it all the way to the end which is at Anadolu Kavagi a little fishing village – have a great seafood meal and then…
Take a taxi (don’t hike it) up the mountain and visit this really neat ruin of a castle. From here you can see a view that stretches out to the mouth of the Black Sea. They started doing a dig there so you can’t get into the castle anymore but it is a pretty spectacular view from outside. Plus its a ruin so there is not much to see inside that you can’t from the outside.
On the cruise you will see a giant three towered castle – the Castle of Europe. You get great views from the cruise but it is also possible to visit (with buses and taxis). As castles go – it is very well preserved, a nice fortification ,and a pleasant afternoon – but again I like castles. Some just enjoy the views from the cruise – I like going there – it has a great little outdoor theater. There is another little castle across the water called the Castle of Asia – it is barely visible from the water and not worth visiting in person (I did once and if you blink you miss it).
Cappadocia Day Tour
It’s not Istanbul – in fact it is not anywhere near Istanbul but if you fly halfway across the world why not go for a little more. Capaddocia is simply magical. Last year I did a one day trip – they fly you out in the morning, drive you all over, feed you, and then fly you back. In one day I saw: Devrent Valley, Pasabag/Monk’s Valley, Avanos Pottery Village, Goreme, and Uchisar Citadel. Its a slippery slope though because you can spend more days here and then start seeing the other sights outside Istanbul – but I feel one little excursion doesn’t hurt.
Other Things To Do
Eat! Shop! Listen to Music! Watch Dancing! Go to a Turkish Bath! Get a Shave! Shop for a Turkish Carpet (but don’t buy it).

Edit Your Photos!
First, you have too many photos – it’s great that you took so many but now its time to separate the good from the bad.
If they are blurry they are garbage – you aren’t going to unblur them – just get over it and move on.
You don’t need expensive software to edit the individual photos – there are plenty of free online photo editors out there like http://pixlr.com/.
A few pointers:
Rotate! With a little practice you can straighten most photos.
Crop! I always tell people that inside of every photo is a better photo and its your job to find it.
Also, special FX does not equal art. Yeah it can be fun but is it really making something good or just something “different”.
Digital Picture Frames
Digital picture frames are more than just good presents! Get one for yourself to display your own photos!
Post Them Online
Don’t email your photos, instead create a gallery or a slideshow on a site like Flickr.
Create Prints and Canvas
ImageKind is a great service where you can have your pictures printed on canvas or art paper and even matted and framed. They are not the cheapest service but they create real quality results.
CafePress allows you to turn any picture into – well almost anything – clothes – mugs – clocks – iPhone cases – you won’t believe all the stuff they let you turn your pictures into!
Create Photo Books
Photo Books are a lot of fun – and much easier to create than you might imagine! All you need to do is upload the pictures to the website and make a few choices. I am listing three different book making companies. SnapFish is good for short photo books (and other things too). If you want very large photo books you can use Blurb – they are a great company if you want more pages, larger format, or high end paper. LuLu is another company for making Photo Books but also cookbooks and even that novel you are secretly writing.

Big files can be very unwieldy.
If you are working with digital video tapes you get some pretty big files (DV tapes are 200MB per min or about 12GB per hour). On a PC they are DV encoded AVI files and on a MAC they are DV encoded QuickTime files. They are pretty much identical and will open on any computer for editing but only if you can manage to get them there.
There are other types of big files too – but generally they are video files (or installers).
Files of this size are too large to email, burn to a data DVD, or transfer via the web using a free file transfer service. Even if you are clever enough to open up a direct network share or FTP – the time to transfer them is often way too long to be useful.
Here is the big problem: You can not copy a file larger than 4GB to an ‘off the shelf’ external hard drive unless you do something special to it first.
By default external hard drives come formatted as FAT32 which doesn’t allow for files over 4GB!
Now they come this way on purpose because the FAT32 file system is universally compatible with both Windows and Mac.
So what are your options?
Well that depends on your platform.
On a Windows machine you would want to convert the drive to NTFS and on a Mac you would want to convert it to Mac OS Extended (HFS+). The trick is – one you have converted the drive to one or the other then it is locked only for operating system. There are some tricks around this though which I will get to after we convert the drive.
NTFS Drive Conversion (for Windows Users)
The good news with NTFS drive conversion is that it is SAFE as it doesn’t reformat the drive or destroy the data – it just takes some time.
From a Windows command prompt type following command (in this example the HD is a D drive):
convert D: /fs:ntfs
Follow the prompts – it will ask you for the drive label/name to make sure you aren’t doing this by mistake (because you can’t go backwards).
Mac OS Extended – Drive Conversion (for Macintosh Users)
From your Mac go to the Utilities Folder under Applications and choose the Disk Utility – from here you can reformat/repartition the drive to Mac OS Extended. This does wipe the drive – so be warned!
OK That was the simple part – but what if I am in a mixed environment?
What if I go back and forth between Windows and Mac and need to stay compatible with both?
So this is where it gets a little tricky.
Windows can read and write NTFS drives but Mac can READ but not write to NTFS drives.
So if you are just trying to get your files TO a Mac an NTFS drive can be used but only in one direction.
Solution 1: Allow your Mac to read and write to NTFS drives:
NTFS for Mac is a $20 software package that allows your Mac to both read and write to NTFS drives – it works great and is a quick and easy solution.
Solution 2: Allow your Windows machine to read and write to Mac OS Extended (HFS+):
HFS+ for Windows is a $20 software package that allows Windows to both read and write to HFS+ drives – it also works great and is a quick and easy solution.
Solution 3: Cross Platform USB Data Transfer Cable
A cross platform USB data transfer cable allows large files to be transferred between two computers. Make sure it is a cross compatible one like the one above so it can do windows-windows mac-mac windows-mac mac-windows (many are windows only). They are cheap and pretty easy to use!
Solution 4: Multi-part File
Lastly, it is possible to break a large file into smaller chunks which can be placed on a FAT32 hard drive or burned to a series of DVDs. Software like this is free and is fairly easy to use.
I suggest HJSplit – it even has setting for presets for different chunk sizes.

First is Amazon Prime – I LOVE Amazon Prime. Free 2 day shipping, discounted overnight shipping, one free Kindle Book rental a month and a ton – and I mean a ton – of free movies and TV shows for live streaming on your computer or Kindle Fire (but not iPad). If its so good – why isn’t it on my list? You can’t gift it! You can’t even pay for it with a gift card. All you can do is tell people about it. You’ve been told!
The Sony Personal Viewer – they say its the best 3D headset made in years! You just can’t get your hands on one until January (and my guess is that’s iffy). However I really really want one.
Speaking of things I really really want. The Thing-O-Matic 3D Printer is a toy lovers toy. It makes things. Its pretty hardcore though. You have to assemble it and download (or make your own) models for it. Its not too expensive (as 3D printers go – as toys go maybe) – but it has a 4 to 5 week lead time.
Shipping in Spring of 2012 (we hope) is the Lytro camera – and while I really want one – its like giving a kid in Cleveland a bicycle for Christmas. Here is your present now wait a few months to enjoy it. When I know they are shipping and they really work – I will be first in line (well I guess second).

This week I was asked by WKYC Channel 3’s Nicole Sellars to give some opinions about Sting’s new iPad app.
We talked about it for some time and not surprisingly the entire piece was just over a minute. I figured I might take a few minutes to go into greater detail.
The originally proposed question was: Do I think that apps will eventually replace music in the way that MP3s did the CD and the CD did tapes and records?
My answer: NO
In truth the app is not intended do that – if anything it replaces the book or liner notes which are terribly absent in the age of digital music.
In an era where the album is dead, “a-la-cart” music shopping isn’t just for a few singles but for all songs and it is not surprising that the ‘box set’ might appear to be even deader.
What Sting and company have done here is to give away an amazing promo piece – they give you the booklet and hope you buy the music.
I read on a website that they said they gave it away because they don’t know what it was worth – they will learn – because inside of the app is a link to sample, purchase, and download every Sting song and album.
The app is very polished and very respectable – it doesn’t feel like a giant sales pitch. And giant it is – its well over 400MB to download and the video files are not included in that. All of the video is only available via online streaming.
So what is in the app?
The app starts (after a nice little shout-out to Chevrolet and American Express) with a timeline that stretches from 1985 to the present.
Its a little deceptive. Sting doesn’t being in 1985 – just as a solo artist – its weird to see a Sting timeline without seeing a Police reference.
Anyways – everything is very visual – images slide up and down to the right and left. Nothing ‘tells’ you its a button but you soon figure out what leads where. For the most part its a mixture of images and video clips. Again the video clips stream – so your connection becomes a critical point for the apps performance. The pictures are nice but the hand written lyrics are really special. They could have been better though – they made the lyrics pages a stark black and white (to try and clean them up) and sometimes it feels like they are bad digital photoscopies – even worse you can’t zoom in and really get into them. Another annoying thing is that you don’t know you are at the end of a section until it doesn’t let you go any more. You can really get into a section and without an indication of where you are you want more and more and then… brick wall.
Scattered throughout are 360 degree object virtual reality photographs of his instruments. These are great if… if you can find them and if you can realize to slide from side to side to get them to spin instead of just clicking the zoom button (which makes you think they are simply zoomable photographs). I loved the video clip placed next to each instrument though to allow you to see them in context (and action).
The clips from the Sixtieth Birthday Concert are great though they really do feel more like excerpts of something bigger (the songs are whole) but it really is a tease.
Probably the most innovative section was the interactive map. This places hotspot of of his life over a Google map that you could explore and would lead you back into the other sections. Interesting but probably a little out there for most. And of course the music icon that allows you to demo and purchase all the songs.
Overall its a really good app. No question it is enjoyable and something you can really get lost in.
Will change the way I listen to music? No – of course not.
First – its an iPad app so its not even meant to live where I keep my music (my iPhone and iPod Touch). Second – even if it was all of Stings songs in one place – it probably would only appeal to people who ONLY want to listen to Sting all day (my brother). Will it change the way music is marketed? Sure. But Sting isn’t the first to do this – he is just the most famous – or probably more importantly doing it on this type of scale. You have to be Sting to have people want to read your liner notes before you buy the album. The bigger question is less one of content but of design. Assuming that the app is successful (how could it not be) and that people buy songs (of course they will) how will the industry follow this up?
If they just take this exact app and pop in U2 stuff for Sting – then it might feel stale – we demand both the content and design to be unique and Sting gets both because he is mainstreaming early.
How will the designs stay fresh without going crazy or becoming obnoxious – and what happens when a record executive says – why aren’t we charging for this?
Lastly, what is so different about this than a website? I mean its images, streaming video, some object VRm a Google map, and a bunch of links to the iTunes store.
This is where design comes in – if it felt like a website we would reject it – if it feels like a marketing pitch we reject it. And we want it in our hands on our mobile devices – everything on them feels just a little bit closer.
Overall Sting and company have done a brilliant job of balancing – giving as much as they are asking – and that’s what makes this a pretty spiffy app!

A strange thing happened last night at the movies.
The film broke.
I haven’t seen anything like it in so long that at first we all thought it was part of the movie – the pause of the film and then the burning of the frame until the screen was a pure white.
I kept having flashes of The Muppet Movie. But after a few moments we all realized that the film had gotten stuck and melted.
So we waited. About 2 minutes later the lights turned on.
No one came out to say anything and we just waited realizing that if the lights were on that someone knew what was happening and probably splicing the film.
About 5 minutes later – the lights when ALL the way on and a manager (and a security guard) came in to tell us that they would not be able to repair the film and that if we would leave the theater he would be giving us replacement passes.
So we left and he handed us each a movie pass.
We were at most 5 minutes from the end of the film. I don’t know how it ends (well it was J Edgar so I do know how it ends) but I don’t care to sit through the entire film again to see the ending.
As a regular of the theater I told another manager that this wasn’t acceptable – it wasn’t enough. They ruined my evening – they didn’t get that – sure I got my ticket money back – but what about my time (or my popcorn) or my general disappointment. Was I going to blow this pass on a movie I had already seen most of and didn’t want to sit though again? She said that later in the week I could come back and just pop in to see the ending. This was nice and I might do that but what about everyone else? What about the fact that the free movie ticket was done to make them feel better – to scrape by with the least amount of effort.
No one left that theater happy.
And when the manager brought security with him to inform us we needed to leave – he knew it too.
He just didn’t care.
Shame on them.
I just got off the phone with Apple – they told me they were not going to approve my latest app.
This isn’t the first that Apple has rejected an app – they once rejected a gag iPad app – they said it didn’t have enough function, which was probably true, so I let it go. They also didn’t like the functionality of one of my iPhone apps but after a quick explanation they changed their mind.
However this one doesn’t make any sense. They rejected Mandalas Gallery Edition.
My kaleidoscopic painting program Mandalas has been very popular. It has been so popular that I now give away a free version – Mandalas FREE – that has the same functionality but also has ads.
I have been taking iPads and the app to art exhibitions and galleries as part of a work called “The Mandalas Project”.
“The Mandalas Project” is a collection of images made by the Mandalas app by users at these galleries and exhibitions. The Mandalas app has been part of 7 exhibitions to date (most by invitation) and has even won an award at a juried show. For these installations I have created a modified version of the app called Mandalas Gallery, which has a custom user interface. In this version the screen has instructions on it at all times, resets after every save, and resets if nothing is pressed for some time, it also has no ads. I used my experience from working at various art festivals (and my time working at the Cleveland Museum of Art) to craft an exhibition friendly interactive.
So I took this app – wrote a very clear description of what it does and whom it is for (and also telling people to try the free one first) and set the price at tier 80 – or $499. This actually is a discount from what I would normally charge (plus Apple takes their 1/3). My business partner questioned if Apple would have a problem with such a high price – but as I reminded him – they are the ones who set the tier levels – they make a tier 80 (hell they even make a tier 99) so they must expect a situation where someone might use it. We aren’t being wishful here either – the project is a reality – it has lived in galleries and we have been paid to do it.
I posted it and waited. I knew something was wrong when they emailed me and said there would be a delay in the review. And then they called me. I was surprised. Last time it was all done via email. The guy on the phone was very nice but he said that I had rated the program at ages 4+. I explained that I just filled out the form and since it wasn’t dirty, violent, or scary it automatically rated at 4+. He said that since the price was so high I needed to get it rated at 17+ so that no one purchased it by mistake. This is fair – I am not looking for ‘sucker sales’ I just want to be able to sell it to galleries without having to setup their iPads myself.
He instructed me to re-submit the app with the 17+ rating – to get it to 17+ he told me to hit the scary, adult, violence buttons and that they would know why I was rating it so high. I did this and also put in the review notes why I was doing it. I do think it is weird that there isn’t a button just called 17+ where a developer can choose to make it 17+ without using those presets. So I posted it and waited again.
I was surprised when after a few days I again got an alert that said that there would be a delay in the review. I missed the first phone call from Apple and when I returned it they said they could have someone call me back – they could not transfer me. When the guy did call me back he said that the app was too expensive. I started to explain to him about things and also that I spoke to someone previously on this. He told me he was the one who I spoke to and that they felt my app wasn’t worth that much money. (He never told me why he didn’t tell me this the last time – I assume their process is very rigid and very linear.) So I explained it all over again about the galleries and the modifications and such. He asked why I didn’t just use the business to business distribution model instead. I told him that if I was trying to push this to galleries that I wouldn’t mind it but that with galleries viewing iPad apps as legitimate forms of art that being able to post it to the app store for people to see and find should be perfectly valid. He said they he couldn’t help me because they ‘didn’t feel it was worth that much money’. So I asked him how much they DID feel it was worth. He told me he couldn’t say – just that it wasn’t worth THAT much. Now this is silly – they allow for the high prices – I can prove that I have sold the app for MORE than this – it as been IN galleries – all he can tell me is to try again until he feels that the price is right but can’t tell me how they come to their valuation?
Then he asks why it is even a separate app and suggests that I make it an in-app purchase. Now this is a ridiculous suggestion. I definitely don’t want the average person sitting there seeing a buy-it-now button for a $499 upgrade that they won’t want – that is just bad business. It also isn’t the model!
He did tell me I can contest this and I will be taking to the appeals board. I do want to say that he was very nice – but the situation is unacceptable.
